Parisian cemeteries outside Paris

Parisian cemeteries outside Paris
This study presents a systematic analysis of Parisian cemeteries which although clearly non-exhaustive,  does make it easier both to understand the specific nature of these cemeteries and to see how they compare at a local as well as regional level. The note comes in two parts. The first looks at the questions of death, and the timespan and manner of burial.  The second examines the situation and location of Parisian cemeteries from an urban, landscape and architectural viewpoint, compared with those in other parts of France and, above all, abroad.
Using this data, an evaluation has been made which covers a number of subjects on varying scales (from the urban situation and location to graves and burial plots). Based on this evaluation, potential development scenarios have been sketched out in an attempt to answer urban, landscape and architectural questions posed at both a global and a local level, and to open up the possibility of making changes concerning funerary practices, management, programmes and spatial organisation…

Note to readers:
Since 2010, various different studies have been undertaken by Apur within the framework of its partnership work programme and as a result it became evident that this report, which was published in 2006, needed to be updated.
This update mainly affects Part A, in particular the death rate in Paris and the impact this is likely to have on the management of burials up to 2040. Part of the data concerning cremation has also been revised. The update of Part B for the most part concerns the selection of images which now includes more references to cemeteries in the centre of the metropolis and to examples of modern developments in Europe as a whole.
