Study Day – Future energy consumption in existing buildings in Brussels: between conservation and performance

Study Day – Future energy consumption in existing buildings in Brussels
Buildings belong to one of the most polluting and energy-hungry sectors. Therefore the work of reducing energy consumption in buildings represents a crucial lever in the attempt to reach the ecological aims set by European directives.
Responding to energy challenges while at the same time conserving heritage has become one of the main issues that old building renovation and rehabilitation projects have to deal with.
With this in mind, the Regional Public Service “Brussels Urban Development” has organised a Study Day on December 11, 2014, focusing on the future energy consumption of buildings in Brussels. This Study Day will bring professionals in the public and private sphere together with experts and scientists to enrich the debate and the thinking about know-how and practice, actions taken and those to come, and make a response to the complex problems posed by energy transition.
Julien Bigorgne, Environmental Engineer at Apur, will present the study “Improving energy performance in old buildings” which was undertaken on behalf of the Brussels-Capital Region.
This exploratory and forward-looking report is based on an analysis of a sample of buildings and urban fabric characteristic of Brussels, and first of all suggests ways of improving the energy conservation schemes relating to the renovation of buildings, and secondly, shows how important the role of urban regulations concerning energy conservation is in the urban transformation process.
