900 housing units created per year by converting work premises in Paris.

Between the 1st January 2013 and 31st December 2022, 2,340 conversion operations of work premises into housing units were authorised producing a total area of 546,607 m² of housing.

These conversions can be classified under 3 categories:

  • 840 permits are strictly for the the transformation of offices into housing, that is to say with no  mix of any other type of activity  (red circles on the map), they represent the creation of a residential surface area of 176,471 m², i.e. 2,539 housing units.
  • 132 conversions into housing permits include partly office space and partly another type of activity (blue circles), i.e. a residential surface area of 133,129 m² (2,149 housing units). These operations are larger than the former ones because they often involve an entire building with mixed activities (an average of 1,068 m² transformed per operation).
  • 1,368 permits are for the conversion of business premises where no offices were transformed into housing (white circles). These represent a surface area of new housing  of 236,007 m² and  4,752 dwellings. The biggest operations in this category concern parts of hospitals which are being relocated or restructured, or even former garages.

The vast majority of conversion operations of business premises and/or office space into housing involve the creation of entire housing units, however, there are also operations where existing housing units are enlarged.
