Programmatic guidelines for the coming years
However long it takes us to manage the present health crisis, it will leave lasting marks on the city, urban ways of functioning, economies, life styles, the architecture of housing, the real estate market. And although it needs to be the starting point of all future work, it has already influenced the direction of work underway while strengthening our founding principles:

  • The city of tomorrow is already here and this reality is the first element of a sustainable city. It is a question of living better in today’s city.
  • Cities consume but they also produce, cities invent, they are the reflection of our culture.
  • A city is multiple: old, historical cities, detached housing urban fabrics, post-war cities, housing estates, new neighbourhoods; each of these urban forms has assets which it is our task to develop and bring to fruition. The detached housing fabric can be instrumental in a passive ecological city, housing estates and post-war cities, sources of cultural and social action, old cities, the expression of historical identity and the founder stone of centralities, new neighbourhoods, places for experimental architectural and environmental programmes.
  • The city is a network, a network on a global scale (the urban zone planned in Shanghai is equivalent to a circle encompassing Paris/London/ Amsterdam), a polycentric network which weaves new links, a local, multicultural network which will remain a place of arrival for those who have nothing.
  • The city is communal and citizens are those who act within their city, they have the taste of it and increasingly more time: new links will be established between the city and city-dwellers which will require fewer norms and greater inventiveness and flexibility.
