Paris, metropolises. A governance challenge

étude - têtière actu - Paris, Métropoles - Le défi de la gouvernance

In preparation for the the seminar “Paris, Metropolises. A governance challenge” organised on the 1st and 2nd of December 2011 by the City of Paris, Apur was requested to draw up a selective bibliography and collection of maps aimed at contributing some objective data – general indicators  and information concerning governance methods – of the metropolises chosen as study cases for the seminar workshops:  Antwerp, Barcelona, Berlin, Bogotá, Chicago, Copenhagen, Hong-Kong, London, Paris, New-York, Rio-de-Janeiro, Randstad, Stuttgart, Turin, Tokyo.

These fifteen metropolises are spread across three continents (Europe, America, Asia) and posses very varied demographic, geographic, economic and institutional characteristics. They were chosen as part of the seminar programme to illustrate diverse themes ranging from “territorial leadership” to multiculturalism and the role of private operators in metropolitan construction.

This collection of papers was not intended to provide a comparative analysis of these metropolises but rather to be used as a  “tool-kit” for the purposes of the workshops' different  themes. It is comprised of 15 monographic papers presented in a summarised format.  Each of them has two situation maps, some statistics relating to different geographic scales, a diagram and a paragraph about government and governance  methods. Different sources of data have been used, national and international statistical sources (OECD, Eurostat), over the period from 2005 to 2010.

A selection of figures allows a transversal reading of these metropolitan situations, based on a few key figures. A closing paragraph sets out a simplified presentation of the principal governance methods observed.

This work is based on an exploratory study carried out by a group of Science Po students preparing the Master's degree “Governing the large Metropolis” in the framework of a partnership convention with the Parisian Urbanism Agency, Apur, during the months of March to June 2011.
