Between 1999 and 2009, the population of Paris increased by nearly 10,900 inhabitants a year, which is a trend reversal compared to previous decades. An even more marked population growth can be observed in the outlying communes.

These changes are connected to the rise in the number of housing units but also to the decrease in the number of vacant units as well as a stabilisation in the average size of households, all of which are new phenomena. The population is also changing in terms of its composition. The proportion of single-occupancy households is levelling out while that of families is increasing due to the high birth rate.

From the point of view of age, changes are less marked. In spite of the regional and national aging trend, the proportion of 60-year-olds and over is rising very slowly in the capital. Socio-professional changes are taking place with a new increase in “executives and high-ranking professions” and a decrease in “workers” and “employees”. At the same time, the proportion of property-owning households is going up, even if renting is by far the largest sector in Paris.
