60,846 shops, commercial services and bars, cafes and restaurants were listed in Paris in 2023. Over the past three years there has been a slight decrease in the number of shops caused mainly by competition from e-commerce. Personal goods shops  (clothes, footwear, etc.) and agencies (banking, travel, etc.) have been particularly affected. On the other hand, the number of food shops, health and beauty establishments and fast-food restaurants has been rising.

Between 2020 and 2023, 863 emerging commercial outlets opened in Paris. They reflect Parisians’ new aspirations and the social changes underway. Businesses, which were rare or non-existant in the past, have developed rapidly over the past few years. For example, the 97 new businesses selling and repairing bicycles are in tune with the new, more eco-friendly and more active forms of mobility. There has been a boom in second-hand, vintage, clothes shops, formerly simple thrift shops (112 new shops), alongside a huge number of online sales via Vinted and Le Bon Coin. And finally, a fundamental, trend that is still growing, for everything connected to health-care and well-being with the creation of over 550 new establishments (beauty parlours, hearing-aid sales points, CBD retailers, etc.) particularly in the centre and west of Paris.
