Supermarket food retailers in Paris

étude - têtière - La grande distribution alimentaire APBROAPU516

The number of small supermarkets or “supérettes” selling food in Paris has risen from 205 in 2000 to 364 in 2010 (+77% in 10 years), their surface area for sales increasing from 53,700 m2 to 88,000m2 (+ 34,300m2 in 10 years). Three major retail groups, Casino, Carrefour and Cora are behind a multitude of other trade names.

The rapid expansion of these “supérettes” has resulted in a decrease in traditional shops (butchers, fishmongers, etc.) but has met the need to modernise trading practices (self-service, brand diversity, long opening hours). In terms of logistics, large supermarket chains rationalise their delivery services which helps to reduce the ecological footprint.
